Kim Thúy is a Vietnamese-born author living in Montreal, Canada. Thúy’s debut novel Ru is read like an autobiography but is written as the fictional tale of migrant experiences. The novel won the Governor General’s Award for French-language fiction at the 2010 Governor General’s Awards. An English edition was published in 2012. The novel won the 2015 edition of Canada Reads. Ru will be published in Finnish in April 2019.
The word ru has significance in both French and Vietnamese. In French, the word means stream or flow of money, tears or blood. In Vietnamese, the word means cradle or lullaby.
